Our personal take
Thomas and I believe that it is for no one to decide what our personal habits are. We don’t want to tell others to stop wearing fragrances or perfumes; it is a personal choice that is important to have. But we urge for a change that allows others not to have to be part of it.
It reminds me of a time when the world was smoking…it took decades to shift awareness and regulation in the interest of the collective. With shared fragrances, it really is not that different. It’s the fragrance in action that changes from being a personal choice to a collective one. Actively spraying equals we are also consuming as absorption through olfaction (nose) and inhalation. Imagine having to eat something every day but not wanting to, and/or because it makes you feel ill or causes a reaction. The collective awareness and change will come, but it’s going to take some time.
While laws and regulations on this matter are not yet in place, there is something we can do! We can speak up as residents, as a community, and stand for our values.
A matter of common sense?
Thinking about it… how many elevators have you been in that are actively releasing a strong, unknown substance into your breathing space? We have lived in more than a handful of buildings in Miami, and Icon is the only one we can think of:
Fragrance-FREE elevators:
Brickell Heights, Epic Residences, Le Parc, Four Seasons
Can you think of others? Please share with us so we can make this a long list! Thank you.
